Removing Barriers - Disability Champion and Campaigning

Date: February 2011 and April 2011(Dates will be agreed with delegates who expressed an interest)
Time: 11am – 4pm
Venue: London

No prior knowledge needed, open to new or experienced trade unionists, disabled people or Disability Champions who are interested in championing disability equality issues.

AIM: To strengthen trade unionists to identify, organise and campaign on disability equality issues.

The course content will be agreed with delegates and is likely to draw from the following:
• Explore why discrimination occurs
• Build trade union counter arguments
• Consider barriers to progress
• Clarify our understanding of the “social model”
• Identify barriers to inclusion

• Consider ways of removing barriers
• Consider acceptable language
• Concepts of trade union organising
• Identify campaigning issues
• Explore campaigning strategies
• Look at how to mobilise support
• Note key points of the legislation
• Understand when the DDA /equality act can be used
• Understand the duties placed on employers
• Examine the scope of the (disability) equality duties
• Look at example disability equality schemes
• See how this can influence the private sector
• Organise to build a movement

Requirements: No prior knowledge or experience is necessary. You must be a current trade union member and have an impairment or health condition, or consider yourself to be a disabled person. Places are limited to 12.

Attendance is free of charge. Your commitment to attend all three sessions is sought

The course will be facilitated by Dave Smith, an experienced TUC Trade Union trainer.
