Working With Disabled Young People To Encourage And Enable Full Participation

Engagement of disabled children and young people in shaping services at a local level results in the provision of more appropriate services, and can help services work more efficiently and effectively, allowing for more flexible and tailored provision. Disabled young people need to be given the opportunities to develop their skills, gain experience and be given information to support their participation.
This course aims to give learners an opportunity to focus on different communication methods and raise awareness of the need for alternative techniques to encourage and enable participation by disabled young people
Learning Outcomes
• Understand barriers to communication
• Be able to work in partnership with those who know the child or young person best
• Understand a fully participative approach
• Be familiar with how to work with children who communicate using technology
• Understand ways to communicate with sensory impaired young people
Target audience
A wide range of staff and managers working with disabled young people and issues of participation.
Please note : participants should have already undertaken some disability awareness training such as “Introduction to Working with Disabled Young people”, or be aware of key issues and the ‘social model’.
