Capacitybuilders develop new £3m programme to boost volunteering support

Capacitybuilders is developing a new £3m programme to boost the support available to people managing volunteers. The programme, to be launched in June, is part of a £6.6m boost for volunteering announced by the Office of the Third Sector on 6th May.

The programme has three key strands including grant funded local projects to further increase the reach and quality of support for local people managing volunteers, work to raise the profile of volunteer management at a national level and bursaries to increase access to training relevant to the management and co-ordination of volunteers. Want to explore how you could collaborate with another organisation or perhaps even merge? Then read on.

The Modernisation Fund

In February 2009 the Cabinet Office announced Real Help for Communities; a series of new funding programmes targeted at managing the impact of the recession on the third sector.

Funded by the Office for the Third Sector, the £16.5 million Modernisation Fund will help third sector organisations be more resilient to the impact of the economic downturn.

What is available?
The Modernisation Fund comprises a mix of grant and loan funding delivered by Capacitybuilders and futuerbuilders. £1,000 bursaries and grants of up to £10,000 will be distributed by Capacitybuilders from June,

A second stage of the programme includes loans of £30K or over and will be distributed by Futurebuilders to third sector organisations with existing plans for mergers and collaboration or who wish to take forward other activity to help their business prepare for difficult times.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the £1,000 bursary your organisation must have an annual income of between £150k and £750k and be delivering a recession related service.

What is a Recession Related Service?
Capacitybuilders has described a recession related service as one that falls into at least one of the following thematic areas;

Theme 1 - Wellbeing and health
 mental health
 substance abuse
 domestic abuse
 family support services
 homelessness
 crime prevention and victim support
 supporting social cohesion

Theme 2 - Advice information and guidance

Theme 3 - Loss of income, training and skills

 Training
 Poverty alleviation

Whilst this is a national programme, Capacitybuilders are utilising the knowledge of local and sub regional ChangeUp Consortia to deliver the programme. In the East London sub region, the ChangeUp East London Partnership selected two Local Delivery Agents [LDA] to deliver the fund. The two LDA’s are the Forum@ Greenwich http://www.forumatgreenwich.org/ and the East London Community Foundation.
Each LDA’s is covering 5 boroughs which are;

The Forum@ Greenwich
 Bexley
 Hackney
 Greenwich
 Lewisham
 Tower Hamlets

The East London Community Foundation

 City

Workshop Events
Two workshops giving you an opportunity to seek advice and information, and explaining the fund in more detail, will be held shortly.
