Barking and Dagenham
Barking & Dagenham CVS is the umbrella organisation for the voluntary and community sector in the borough. We provide information, advice and support to all voluntary and community organisations on a wide range of issues, including:
- Charity law
- Financial management
- Fundraising
- Project planning and management
- Setting up and managing an organisation
- Recruiting and managing staff and volunteers
- Health and safety
- Report writing
- Quality systems
- Partnership work
Information is sent to all groups on our database through our bimonthly newsletter and regular mailings. Our dedicated development workers also provide support to groups through one to one advice sessions and training courses, all tailored to groups' needs and delivered at accessible times and venues, including evenings and weekends.
As the umbrella organisation, the CVS acts as the bridge between the voluntary and community sector and strategic bodies such as the Association of London Government, the London Development Agency and the Local Authority. We champion and promote the work of the sector to these strategic bodies, participate in consultations and lobby for appropriate and sustainable funding for the sector.
One of the strengths of the voluntary and community sector is its breadth and diversity. The CVS does not claim to be the voice of the sector, but rather we create the platform so that voluntary and community organisations in the borough can make their own voices heard. We organise a quarterly Voluntary Sector Forum for groups to raise and discuss issues, share ideas and network, and we co-ordinate other joint-working initiatives such as the Compact and the sector's input to the Barking and Dagenham Partnership.
Please contact any CVS staff member for more information about our services and how you can access them or how you can become involved in our work.

Greenwich
Greenwich Action for Voluntary Service “GAVS” is the umbrella organisation for the “Third Sector” in Greenwich, providing a range of services to assist the development of the “Third Sector” in Greenwich. The work of GAVS falls into five categories:-
Services and support
Promoting the effectiveness of local Third Sector groups by providing them with a range of services including:-
- Information services
- Finance support
- Payroll and Book keeping
- Profiling and Mapping
- Training and Development
- Signposting
- Organisational Development
- Governance Assistance
- Help with Fundraising
- Quality Mark Development
Liaison
As the focal point for the Third Sector, GAVS encourages networking between individuals and groups within the sector, and between local groups and the statutory and private sectors. This allows local groups to learn from one another, establish contacts and work more effectively. GAVS also helps different communities to organise their own networking activity. This is achieved through the development of forums and network meetings
Representation
GAVS enables the views of local groups to be represented, providing an opportunity for local groups to put forward their views on national and local policies, influencing the strategies that will impact on their services and beneficiaries, this is achieved through Sector specific forums, consultation events and the GAVS websites.
Development work
GAVS takes the lead in identifying gaps in service provision and works with groups to develop new and innovative services to meet these needs, the mapping and profiling work helps identify need and want, this together with the Third Sector engagement helps identify the priorities. GAVS will assist other groups to develop these new services or where there may be no group who can develop the service GAVS will undertake this work until the service is ready to float on its own.
Strategic partnerships
GAVS works in partnership with local government and other statutory agencies to shape the delivery of services. GAVS plays a key role in empowering local groups to take part in partnerships and are directly involved in a wide range of regeneration, neighbourhood renewal, health and social care, learning and other government initiatives. Strategic partnerships may be sub-regional, district wide or neighbourhood. They may cover several issues or have a particular focus.
